Folly Quarter News
Congratulations!
Ella Chen, 7th grade student at Folly Quarter Middle, was selected as a finalist for the 36th Annual "Champions of Courage" Competition with her essay on Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The competition challenged students in grades 6 through 12 to write a brief essay saluting their personal "Champion of Courage"...a positive role model who has touched their lives by sharing the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sixteen Baltimore area students were chosen as finalists. Ella's essay, along with the other finalists, will be featured on February 16, on FOX45, CW Baltimore and myTV Baltimore. We are very proud of her achievement!
Congratulations to 7th grade student, Crystal McGeehan, who has been awarded "1st Place" in the "Together We're Better" Artwork Contest for middle school students. The Arc Maryland, in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, and the Maryland Department of Disabilities offered the experience for students to participate in the “Together We’re Better” Inclusive Education and Artwork Contest. We are so proud of Crystal McGeehan for her entry and fantastic artwork that was submitted and won amongst all middle school students. Congratulations Crystal!

Student Member of the Board (SMOB) Convention

Black History Month at Folly Quarter
Our students are learning about the culture, history and contributions of Black Americans through classroom instruction. Students are learning through the lens of Black authors, engineers, mathematicians, and other figures in history. Students receive daily highlights of notable Black Americans in history through Falcon Watch each day.

Course Registration for 2023/24 School Year
Course registration for the 2023-2024 school year will be available online during the window of February 2, 2023 - February 17, 2023. Please read the letter (linked below) to guide you through the selection process for a yearlong fine arts class and an additional elective for the 2023-2024 school year.

Health Room News
Hearing and Vision Screening
On February 16, FQMS will hold our Hearing and Vision clinic for all 8th grade students and those students new to the state of MD. If your child has glasses or contacts, please make sure they wear them on the screening day. Your child will receive these screenings unless you object for religious reasons. Please send a letter to your child's school health room if you choose to opt out of the Health Department screenings.
If your child does not pass either the vision or hearing screen, you will receive a letter from our school notifying you of this result. It is then recommended that you take your child to have their vision evaluated by an eye care specialist or that you contact your child's medical provider for a referral to an audiologist for a complete hearing evaluation.

Parents/Guardians, we always appreciate communication about your child's health conditions and illnesses. Please ensure that you're directing any questions, concerns, or notification of illness to our school nurse, Laura Smith, 410-313-1510, or email laura_smith1@hcpss and not only your student's teacher. Our nurse is the gatekeeper for health and illness protocol and will be able to help you navigate your specific situation. Thank you!
Media Center News
Chromebook Loaners
A friendly reminder to ensure your student is bringing their charged Chromebook to school every day. Starting in the new year, if a student forgets to bring their Chromebook to school, they will no longer receive a loaner. Instead, they will use a desktop in the media center when they have a digital assignment. HCPSS has changed the process for receiving replacement Chromebooks and the FQMS loaner inventory is often low. We need to prioritize loaners for those students with broken devices awaiting repair.

HCPSS will be offering a free Spring 2023 HCPSS STARTALK Chinese Language After-School Program (virtual) for current HCPSS Grade 7 and Grade 8 students. More on this program may be located
here. Parents/Guardians must
register their students by 8:00 am on Friday, February 17.
HCPSS Inclement Weather Asynchronous Instruction Plan
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) now allows local school systems to repurpose inclement weather days as asynchronous school days. At the discretion of the superintendent, HCPSS will use up to three inclement weather asynchronous days during the 2022-2023 school year. HCPSS Gifted and Talented (G/T) Summer Institutes for Talent Development
