Dear Folly Quarter families and community:

We had an incredible and busy week with so many events for our students and community. I want to thank our PTSA and our staff for two terrific events: the 8th grade volleyball tournament and the Cultural Festival.

The 8th grade volleyball tournament raised over $2,000 for Leukemia and Lymphoma and it was such a fun event to see our students come together, have fun, and be good sports. Thank you to all those who attended, supported, organized and more! Kudos to Ms. Hulett and the 8th grade team… and ALL the staff who volunteered prior, during, and after the event. Kudos to the PTSA, Mrs. Jenkins (parent coordinator), former Falcon referees, and once again all those who volunteered, supported, attended, and more!

The Folly Cultural festival was such a wonderful evening for our community. The event was filled with information, performances, delicious food, fashion show, and so much learning from one another. This was the second annual event and this would not have been possible without our students in the Cultural Club under the leadership of Ms. Thaker and Ms. Munnaluru. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate and attend. I cannot wait for our next year’s event!

Finally, thank you to all of our parent chaperones who attended and supported our 6th and 7th grade field trips this past week. Our 6th graders went to the Howard County Conservancy and our 7th graders went to the Howard County Fairgrounds for Agriculture Awareness Day which was supported by the Howard County Farm Bureau and the Howard County Government. Thank you to our staff who organized the field trips: Ms. Leadbetter, Ms. Capurso, and Ms. Pippen and the 6th grade team for the 6th grade field trip as well as Ms. Stratemeyer, Ms. Baek, and the 7th grade team for the 7th grade field trip.

None of these opportunities would be possible without our incredible staff and parents…thank you!

Sincerely,

Mike Babe

Principal

Take Our Children to Work Day

Thursday, April 25th is Take our children to Work Day.  The program was created as an educational experience for our children.  It provides an opportunity for our children to become more aware of their parents’ work day and encourages them to think about their futures.  If your child is attending your workplace this week, please email: fqmsabsence@hcpss.org so it can be recorded appropriately.  Please also know that instruction will continue on April 25th as normal.

Conflict and Bullying Information

As we gear up to finish the school year strong, it's important to address student interactions that can affect both individual students and/or our school community. Peer conflict is something that most students will experience at some point in their school career. . However, it is essential to understand the difference between conflict and bullying, should bullying occur. By understanding the differences, we can better navigate challenging situations and foster a positive school environment where everyone can thrive. We look forward to continuing to work together to end the school year on a strong and positive note. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!

Conflict

  • Mutual Disagreement: Conflict typically involves a disagreement or difference of opinion between two or more individuals.
  • Equal Power: Those involved in the conflict usually have relatively equal power or standing.
  • Occurs Occasionally: Conflicts arise occasionally and may be resolved through communication, negotiation, or compromise.
  • No Intention to Harm: While emotions may be involved, there is no deliberate intent to harm or exert control over the other party.

Bullying

  • Power Imbalance: Bullying involves an imbalance of power, where one individual seeks to assert dominance or control over another.
  • Repeated Behavior: Bullying often consists of repeated actions or behaviors aimed at causing harm, either physically or psychologically.
  • Intentional Harm: The bully intentionally seeks to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim, often deriving satisfaction from the victim's distress
  • One-sided Aggression: Unlike conflict, bullying typically involves one-sided aggression, where the victim feels targeted and unable to defend themselves adequately.

More information can be found on the HCPSS Stop Bullying website. If you have any questions regarding this policy or its implementation, please contact a school administrator. Here is the online link to report an Instance of Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation and a link to the Bullying, Cyberbullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Reporting Form to fill out and return to your students school administrator. More information on HCPSS Policy9460 can be found at Bullying, Cyberbullying, Harassment, and Intimidation Involving Students - HCPSS.
