FQMS Celebrates the Day of the Dead
The HCPSS Office of World Languages recognizes the educational value of studying the Day of the Dead celebration, which appears on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These days the Spanish students have been learning about this ancient cultural tradition of Mexico. After establishing a class discussion to understand the differences or similarities between the tradition of Halloween and the Mexican Day of the Dead, the students had the opportunity to do a search for people who made a positive contribution to our society, at any time in history, and they created an "altar" to honor the memory of these personalities. The students have done an excellent job, using materials similar to real altars, have learned about this tradition, and have enjoyed making the project. The altars are on display in a Media Center for students and teachers to enjoy.
HCPSS will use the "Synergy Conference Management" to schedule Parent/Teacher conferences. From Monday, November 7, 8:00am until Thursday, November 17, 4:00pm, parents can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select from the conference time slots available. Parents who need help, or who are without online access, may contact Ms. Ranita Knight in the Student Services office at 410-313-1514 or email@example.com for assistance in scheduling conferences. All conferences will be 15 minutes in length. Codes for virtual meetings will be listed under the teacher’s “location” when you sign up for conferences. Directions for scheduling conferences are listed below.

Inclement Weather & Asynchronous Days
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) now allows local school systems to repurpose inclement weather days as asynchronous school days. At the discretion of the superintendent, HCPSS will use up to three inclement weather asynchronous days during the 2022-2023 school year. One of two additional codes will be instituted to reflect the decision to transition to an asynchronous instruction day:
Code Purple Asynchronous Student Day - School buildings and Office buildings open for staff only
Code Pink Asynchronous Student Day - School buildings and Office buildings closed
On these Code Purple and Code Pink days, HCPSS curriculum resources for secondary students will be delivered within the Canvas learning management system. Resources will be available for all subjects and courses two hours after the start of the regular school day.
Secondary Students are expected to:
log into each course via Canvas
complete work assigned for each course
indicate attendance by submitting the “attendance assignment” posted in each class/course
Students will receive grades for assignments in accordance with teacher parameters for the assignments. In accordance with Policy 8020: Secondary Grading and Reporting, all asynchronous day assignments must be completed within 10 days.
Students must ride their assigned buses and exit buses at designated bus stops. Our bus drivers take the safety of students very seriously and want to fulfill this important responsibility. Please contact the Folly Quarter front office if there is an extenuating circumstance regarding your child getting off at a different stop.
