New Student and Family Orientation and Open House - August 21

August 21st 12:45-2:00 PM at Folly Quarter Middle School and Optional Open House from 4:00-5:00 PM.

6th Grade Orientation will be held on Thursday, August 21 from 12:45 PM to 2:00 PM.  Students will enter the building to receive their schedule and then directly report to their homeroom (Falcon time). Parents and guardians will meet in the cafeteria while students are with their teachers.  This orientation will serve as a time for students to meet their teachers for the upcoming school year. Students will also have an opportunity to see the school, practice with their lockers, and learn more about Folly Quarter. For parents and guardians, this will be a time for you to hear about different procedures at Folly Quarter and a brief Q&A with the Administration, counselors, and our PTSA. So please join us and welcome to Our Nest!

New (to Folly Quarter) Student Orientation for 7th and 8th grade students who are first time students at Folly Quarter will be held on Thursday, August 21 from 12:45 PM to 2:00 PM. Students will report to the Media Center and then will have an orientation in the Media Center. Parents and guardians are welcome to join us in the cafeteria to hear about different procedures at Folly Quarter and a brief Q&A with Administration, counselors, and our PTSA. Please, join us and welcome to Our Nest!    There is an Optional Open House for Returning 7th and 8th grade students (or those 6th graders who want to come back) who wish to walk around the building before the first day of school. This will be from 4:00 - 5:00 PM and it is a drop-in opportunity, and students must look up their schedule in Synergy ahead of time and bring it with them (paper copies will NOT be available). Student schedules and locker combinations and assignments will be available in Synergy.  Parents/Guardians must attend with their child. All students can come to the Open House to walk their schedule, practice their locker, drop off supplies, and/or decorate the inside of their locker.

The PTSA will be selling snowballs for students and families AFTER orientation and during the optional open house.

We understand that not everyone is able to attend- so please do not worry. Our first week is dedicated to welcoming students and assisting them with transitioning to the new year.

School Supplies

Here is the school supply list for 2025-2026. Students will only need a few items on the first day of school such as: pencils, pens, paper, folder/binder. Students may also bring a water bottle (clear, if possible). As a reminder, students are only permitted to have water in their water bottle; soda, coffee, juice and other drinks are not permitted in the hallways or classrooms, but can be saved for lunch.

Family File (homework #1)

PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR STUDENT(S) FAMILY FILE before August 22.

Family File Update - ALL Families.  This must be completed each year - don't delay!  We need updated information, including emergency contacts.  Phone numbers, addresses and emails can change.  Please do this today!

Student Schedules

Student schedules will be available via Synergy on August 20 at 8:00am. Please note we are continuing to balance classes based on changing enrollment so please have your child check their schedule again on August 22. We will have printed schedules for our 6th grade students at orientation. We ask our 7th and 8th grade students to use their chromebook to access their schedule (a printed schedule can be provided by request in the office on the first day of school for any student who has difficulty accessing their schedule).

Lockers and Backpacks (change for 2025-2026)

Each student will have access to their assigned locker the first day of school. Students will not be permitted to carry their backpack with them throughout the day. Students are able to use their locker:

  • Before school
  • Before and after Related Arts
  • Before and after lunch
  • After school

We know lockers are a big deal and also can be scary for students; we will be here ready to show patience and care as your child works on remembering their combination and how to open their locker.

School Meals

For the 2025-2026 school year, the meal prices are as follows: breakfast $2.00, lunch $3.30, and milk $.50. You can access your student's lunch account here. Students will be given a PIN # to pay for lunch; cash is not accepted. Please ensure your student has this number before the first day of school.
Many HCPSS families are eligible to participate in the Free and Reduced Price Meals (FARMs) program, which provides children with a wide range of benefits. Families are encouraged to verify their eligibility and submit a FARMs application as soon as possible. Families must submit a new application every school year. Details on Free and Reduced Meals can be foundhere.

Chromebooks

Each student will utilize their county-provided chromebook. Our rising 6th grade students and new HCPSS students will receive their chromebook soon. Information around chromebooks, repair costs, and more are available here.

Lightspeed

Parents/guardians can monitor their child’s HCPSS Chromebook internet usage by signing up for Lightspeed Parent Notifications to receive a weekly email summary of their child’s usage.

Once parents have signed up for Lightspeed Parent Notifications, the email summary delivered each Sunday will contain a link with access to the Lightspeed Parent Portal, which provides near real-time information on their child’s internet activity.

The Lightspeed Parent Portal offers additional details about internet usage and the ability to control a child’s online activities when they are not on the HCPSS network at school by allowing parents to pause the internet for 1 hour, 3 hours or until 6 a.m. the next morning. Frequently asked questions about Lightspeed and the Parent Portal can be found online.

HCPSS teachers will access Lightspeed in the classroom to monitor student Chromebook usage.  Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher if they notice their child is regularly on non-academic websites during the day.

Find instructions on signing up for Lightspeed Parent Notifications online.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to review HCPSS Student Mobile Technology Duties and Obligations, which outlines the responsible use of technology in accordance with HCPSS Board Policy 8080 Responsible Use of Technology, Digital Tools, and Social Media.

Cell Phones

Upon arrival at school, students must put their cell phones away in their locker or backpack. Phones are not to be used or seen/heard. Per HCPSS Policy 8080, student use of cell phones is not permitted in Howard County schools during the school day. Families are reminded that students must abide by Board of Education Policy 8080 Responsible Use of Technology, Digital Tools, and Social Media. Additionally, a dedicated phone is available for students in the main office to use during the day.
